Madurai City is under development. New sewer
drainage system works are in progress by damaging the road at several places. The
work is dead slow. Roads are temporarily covered with mud after partial work. This
makes the road unworthy. Some pedestrians slip and fall down. Motor bikes and
cars either trapped in mud or pass through with difficulties.

A mangala sutra (Thaali) is a necklace that the groom ties around the bride's neck in the Indian subcontinent, in a ceremony called Mangalya Dharanam, which identifies her as a married woman.
The significance of the mangala sutra was re-iterated by Adi Shankara in his famous book Soundarya Lahari. According to Hindu tradition, the mangala sutra is worn for the long life of the husband. As told by religious customs and social expectations, married women should wear mangala sutra throughout their life as it is believed that the practice enhances the well-being of her husband.

How many artists had have tried to imitate the great martial artist Bruce Lee? The answer to it is more than hundred. Martial artists over the world have tried to mimic the great action sequences of Bruce Lee in the past 35 years or so, but none whatsoever has come an inch close to this video.
The video sees a 5-year-old kid from Japan mimic the greatest martial artist known to humanity. The less than 2-minute video sees how Ryusei Imai copies the action sequence from movie ‘The Game of Death’ even without looking at it. This video has over 10 million views and counting in less than few weeks, since it appeared online. It is delighting to see the five-year-old kid impersonate the nunchaku scene, played by Bruce Lee himself.

Ardhanarishvara is a composite androgynous form of
the Hindu God Shiva and His consort Parvati (also known as Devi, Shakti and Uma
in this icon). Ardhanarishvara is depicted as half male and half female, split
down the middle. The right half is usually the male Shiva, illustrating His
traditional attributes.
Ardhanarishvara symbolizes that the
male and female principles are inseparable.Ardhanarishvara
signifies "totality that lies beyond duality", "bi-unity of male
and female in God" and "the bisexuality and therefore the
non-duality" of the Supreme Being.It conveys that God is both Shiva and
Parvati, "both male and female, both father and mother, both aloof and
active, both fearsome and gentle, both destructive and constructive" and
unifies all other dichotomies of the universe.
The earliest Ardhanarishvara images are dated to the
Kushan period, starting from the first century CE. Its iconography evolved and
was perfected in the Gupta era. The Puranas and various iconographic treatises
write about the mythology and iconography of Ardhanarishvara. While
Ardhanarishvara remains a popular iconographic form found in most Shiva temples
throughout India, very few temples are dedicated to this deity.
Ardhanarishvara represents the synthesis of
masculine and feminine energies of the universe (Purusha and Prakriti) and
illustrates how Shakti, the female principle of God, is inseparable from (or
the same as, according to some interpretations) Shiva, the male principle of
God. The union of these principles is exalted as the root and womb of all
creation. Another view is that Ardhanarishvara is a symbol of Shiva's
all-pervasive nature.
Names
The name Ardhanarishvara means "the Lord Who is
half woman." Ardhanarishvara is also known by other names like
Ardhanaranari ("the half man-woman"), Ardhanarisha ("the Lord
who is half woman"), Ardhanarinateshvara ("the Lord of Dance Who is
half-woman"), Parangada, Naranari ("man-woman"), Ammaiappan (a
Tamil Name meaning "Mother-Father"), and Ardhayuvatishvara (in Assam,
"the Lord whose half is a young woman or girl").[ The Gupta-era
writer Pushpadanta in his Mahimnastava refers to this form as dehardhaghatana
("Thou and She art each the half of one body"). Utpala, commenting on
the Brihat Samhita, calls this form Ardha-gaurishvara ("the Lord whose
half is the fair one"; the fair one – Gauri – is an attribute of Parvati).
The Vishnudharmottara Purana simply calls this form Gaurishvara ("The
Lord/husband of Gauri).
The Chithirai festival of Madurai is one of the most
colourful and vivacious festivals of the region that falls in the Tamil month
of Chithirai, usually between April and May. The festival has cultural and
mythological significance that makes it all the more special and unique. It is
celebrated from the last 400 years with great enthusiasm and pride. The
festival celebrates the wedding ceremony of Lord Shiva with Lord Vishnu’s
sister, goddess Meenakshi. The idols of both the groom and bride are carried in
gold chariots and people gather in huge number to accompany the God and goddess.
The whole procession is a grand affair that includes people from various parts
of the country and the world.
The festival lasts for almost 15 days and involves a
lot of traditional rituals and practices. People from nearby villages travel on
bullock carts as a part of the ancient tradition and consider it a vital part
of the festival too. Many more ceremonies can be seen during the festival that
includes hosting a flag at the temple, fairs, distributing coconut sweets is
another popular custom that catches the eyes of the visitors. The whole
ambience is filled with the prayers of the devotees. Chithirai Festival of 2017
is planned to be conducted from 28thApril to 13th May
2017 with the same zeal.

The very big lake like tank (pond) called Alangulam is dry
even in rainy season. This kulam is in Madurai 17, Sambandar Alangulam. The
channels lead to kulam (lake) became ditches. They are full of polythene mixed
debris. This prevents entry of water into the lake. The ditch mixed dirty water
finds no way to reach the lake. The channels overflow and the water flows in
the residential area.
Sambar of South Indian food is delicious if it contains
drumsticks as one of the ingredients. I tasted and enjoyed food with Drumstick sambar
at Sambandar Alangulam of Madurai.
I think the local drumsticks here are old variety. They appear stout but short
in length. Why are they short? Any lack of natural fertilizer? Kindly discuss
in the form of comments.
S. Alangulam is a beautiful place in Madurai. Its kulam (pond) is usually not a
kulam. No water in the so called pond or lake. Thick growth of thorny trees is found
in kulam without water, Alangulam. Sun rise is very enchanting here although there is no water.
If filled with water it would be more beautiful.
Water inlet to this dry pond needs to be cleared off from blockage
and debris.
Really you are viewing a lake
of Sambandar Alangulam at Madurai -17. Anaiyur,
Kulamangalam, Mahatma Gandhi Nagar, Sellur, VaigaiRiver
are very near to this. The lake is totally dry in this summer. Water can be
seen only for a few months in a year. Half of the lake is filled with velikkathan
trees, a thorny wood. Kulam means pond. Madurai
city is a combination of many villages. Here in Madurai area, many villages are named after
ponds, pools, lakes, etc. Kanmai means a small man made lake, created for the
purpose mainly for irrigation. Pallam means low level area, and water may fill
this to form a stagnant pool of water. Kanmai is also called kulam here.
There are several kulams. Arasankulam, Andikulam, Asaripallam,
Athikulam, Anaikulam, Ammangulam, Thanakkankulan, Kanakkankulam, bibikulam,
chettikulam, Tallakulam, Oormechikulam, Omachikulam, Koodangulam, Chinnakulam, Sirukulam,
Periyakulam, Perungulam, Karungulam, Senkulam, Gurukulam, Mangulam, Mettukulam,
Poongulam, Pudukulam, Pazhaiyakulam, Reddyakulam, Theppakkulam, Tuvarangulam,
Samikulam, Peikulam,Alangulam, Arasankulam and Veppangulam are some samples.
The water inlets to the pond like lake at S.
Alangulam are blocked at several places. The urbanization spoils
these channels. Dirty ditch flows through the channels with garbage
obstructions dumped by the people living nearby.
Pigs are living in the area. People use the lake, Alangulam,
as open air latrine.
If this continues, one day the kulam will be no more and may
be called verungulam that means kulam without water.
A grand festival is being celebrated at Arulmigu Shri
Pudumariamman temple at Athipatti of Sedapatti Panchayat union, Peraiyur taluk,
Madurai District, Tamilnadu India
from 26 April 2013. This colourful great festival will continue up to 30 Apr
2013. Several varieties of celebrations and functions to worship the Goddess
are planned and arrangements made. One of the promulgations of the events, bit
